About the Great Blue Heron Project

The Great Blue Herons project is a community-based initiative centered around Dickinson Bayou, aimed at showcasing the city of Dickinson while promoting conservation efforts and boosting economic growth and tourism. This unique public art project features 5-foot-tall heron sculptures, painted and adorned by local artists, strategically placed throughout the city. The project not only enhances the charm and appeal of our city but also aims to increase foot traffic and tourism.

The Southeast coast of Texas is home to the third-largest bird migration path in the United States, and one of the most beautiful birds found along the Dickinson Bayou is the Great Blue Heron. Our goal is to maintain a healthy bayou for these birds and other wildlife, raising awareness about bayou health so our community can continue to enjoy this natural sanctuary. Our efforts include engaging and educating the public through outreach, classroom visits, habitat protection initiatives, and organized trash patrols.

The First Five

The first five Great Blue Heron sculptures are now proudly on display across the City of Dickinson. Funded by the City’s HOT Tax and coordinated by the Dickinson Art Guild, this community partnership has been a resounding success. Each heron represents a charitable component, contributing to the preservation of the bayou, funding future arts programs in the city, and supporting the general welfare of the community.

The herons are placed in front of businesses and bayou-front homes to create a fun and engaging scavenger hunt, similar to those seen in other Texas cities. The first five heron locations are: City Hall – “Aviary” painted by Doug Hiser – 4403 Hwy 3, Boat Ramp – “Diversity” painted by Anat Ronen – Hwy 3, Dickinson, Dickinson ISD Administration Building – “Queen of the Bayou” painted by Annika Farmer – 2218 FM 517, Paul Hopkins Park – “Ocean Motion” painted by Patsy Lindamood – 1000 FM 517, Railroad Museum – “Ernie the Storyteller” painted by Jen Sumrall and DHS Artists 2022 – 218 FM 517
